We’re always trying to re-purpose containers and other everyday household materials into useable items. But one thing that’s always difficult to reuse is container lids that have no containers to go with. This craft puts those to good use while at the same time preventing mug stains on tables! It’s a win win situation altogether! So let’s see how you can turn lids into coasters.
What you’ll need:
- A medium sized lid
- Yarn or rope
- All-purpose glue or hot glue gun
Take the lid and clean it thoroughly. This is especially important as any dust might prevent the yarn or rope from sticking properly.
Once you’ve cleaned and dried it properly, apply glue onto the inside of the lid. Make sure to apply adequately on the inside edges as well. If you’re using all purpose glue, you could apply the glue to the entire lid at once as it will be less trouble. However, if you’re using hot glue apply the glue little by little, as you continue placing the yarn, since it does dry up quicker.
Take the yarn or rope and cut a long strand. If using a thin yarn, fold it once or twice depending on the desired thickness.
Starting from the edges, wrap the yarn round and round. Ensure that there aren’t any gaps and continue to do this until the centre is reached.
It’s alright even if the yarns aren’t laid perfectly circular as long as they are stuck to the base of the lid. After all, since this is handmade it is bound to have its own uniqueness.
You could easily use up all the container lids you have at home and create multiples of these in a day! Or you could even try making these coasters with different colored yarns or with ropes of different thickness to create a mismatched set. The options are endless and ultimately your tables will remain spotless!
