We the People/Wisconsin

We the People/Wisconsin is a multi-media partnership that aims to reconnect citizens with public life through town hall meetings, candidate and issue forums and citizen-based reporting. For more than 15 years, We the People/Wisconsin (WTP) has creatively engaged citizens on a statewide basis in critical political and public policy discussions. Utilizing the outlets of its core media partners – WISC-TV, Wisconsin Public Television, Wisconsin Public Radio, the Wisconsin State Journal and WisPolitics.com, with support from Wood Communications Group – WTP has coordinated live debates, town hall meetings, candidate forums and issue discussions.

At first a Madison-based experiment in "civic journalism," We the People has expanded over the last two decades into a statewide institution that gives voters a genuine and strong voice in shaping the outcome of Wisconsin elections. Thousands of citizens have attended WTP meetings and broadcasts, and more than 1.5 million have watched TV, listened on radio or read WTP stories, columns or editorials in newspapers and online.

In 2010, WTP hosted the final debate between gubernatorial candidates Tom Barrett and Scott Walker and in 2011 will host a live televised debate between Supreme Court Candidates Justice David Prosser and JoAnne Kloppenburg.

Supreme Court Debate

The Wisconsin Supreme Court, composed of seven justices, is the state's highest court. Located in the state Capitol, it has appellate jurisdiction over all Wisconsin courts and has discretion to determine which appeals it will hear. The Supreme Court may also hear original actions -- cases that have not been heard in a lower court. The court selects the cases it will review based on criteria described in the Wisconsin Statutes.

In addition to its case deciding function, the Supreme Court has administrative and regulatory authority over all Wisconsin courts and the practice of law in the state.

During the spring 2011 election two candidates for the open seat in the Supreme Court, incumbent Supreme Court Justice David Prosser and JoAnne Kloppenburg, will be on the ballot. To give Wisconsin citizens the opportunity to hear from and ask questions of the candidates, We the People/Wisconsin will host a live debate between the candidates on Friday, March 25, 2011 broadcast from the Wisconsin Public Television studios. Questions will come from citizens, with guidance from a facilitator with legal expertise in ensuring that questions conform to the parameters in which the judicial candidates can respond. Judicial candidates, for example, may not make promises or commitments on any case, controversy or issue that may come before them if elected, nor may not be members of political parties.

How Do I Watch The Debate?

You can watch the debate live from 7pm-8pm on Wisconsin Public Television and, in the Madison area, on TVW (3-2, cable channel 14).
