Here's a chance to join in the conversation about Wisconsin's energy future - and to take part in a hands-on exercise that simulates the hard choices involved in meeting the state's electrical power demands.

We the People/Wisconsin will host its "Powering Wisconsin" energy conference Monday, Sept. 24 at Madison's Monona Terrace Convention Center. To register for the day-long event, call 1-800-871-7176 or click here to register online.

In the morning, participants will listen to panel discussions on the problems and promise of Wisconsin's energy system - and ask questions directly of policymakers. Panelists will include representatives of Wisconsin utilities, customer organizations, environmental groups and the UW- Madison. A computerized model of the Midwest power transmission grid will also be demonstrated.

In the afternoon, participants will take part in a "Citizens' Energy Choice" exercise designed to test how people want to balance energy sources, costs and reliability with environmental concerns, such as air pollution. Results from separate workshops will be compiled in a "Citizens' Energy Plan" to be presented to the governor, the Legislature and the state Public Service Commission. The computerized exercise is being designed by faculty and students in the UW-Madison College of Engineering.

The $25 conference fee includes a continental breakfast, lunch and all workshops and panels. Fee waivers are available for those who cannot afford the fee.
