POWERING WISCONSIN: May through September, 2001
How
can Wisconsin come out on top in the energy game?
If you could "build your own" solution
to Wisconsin's energy problem, what would your model include?
-
More power plant generation? Depending
on the fuel source, building more power plants can be
expensive, pose environment problems or encounter political
opposition from people who live near the site.
-
More transmission lines coming into Wisconsin?
Finding the right route is tricky, at best, and the electrical
power it would carry from other states or provinces wouldn't
come for free.
-
More alternative energy? Solar and wind
power are intriguing and popular "green" sources,
but they don't generate much reliable energy.
-
More conservation? Of course, but conservation
only goes so far in an era when energy demands are rising
due to our own technological, economic and lifestyle demands.
There are no easy answers - but hard choices must be made
if Wisconsin is to remain in control of its own energy destiny.
Throughout the summer, partners in "We the People/Wisconsin"
will focus on the state's energy problems and possible solutions.
We'll tell you more in the coming weeks about
other stories that we'll explore - as well as opportunities
for citizens like yourself to help policymakers make those
tough choices.
